At a church we had just started attending, several people came up to me, saying, "Why don't you and Harriet go on a Marriage Encounter weekend?"
I asked, "What is it?"
They were rather mysterious about it. We heard few details, but any couple who had gone on such a retreat would say, "It is a great weekend - a good way to strengthen your marriage."
Somewhat miffed, I retorted, "I already have a good marriage."
"But Marriage Encounter is designed to make a good marriage better!" they would say. It seemed to me like a good idea, but when I mentioned it to Harriet, she was very cold: "I don't want to go."
. . . . .
Why did our church acquaintances keep urging us to go to Marriage Encounter until we went? Because their own marriages had been transformed, and they wanted us to discover the same joy. We did. We came away feeling as though we were on a second honeymoon. More important, that radiance has not faded. Why? We learned how to renew and refresh our relationship daily. Our joy has only grown richer with the passing years.
. . . . .
I am convinced that the single step that could do more than any other to slash America's divorce rate is for every married couple to attend a Marriage Encounter weekend. If you are married and have not gone on a Marriage Encounter, put this book down and sign up for the next one.
